Hired! Changing Lanes from the Auto Industry
Hired Changing Lanes from the Auto IndustryHired Changing Lanes from the Auto IndustryChanging lanes for auto manufacturing managerI am watching the fourth day of the Third Cricket Test of Australia against South Africa, said Sheri Olinyk on the night of Jan. 5 from her home in London, Ontario. We have a special cable channel called Cricket Plus with all-day cricket. I turn it on when I cam home from work, and so I watch it for a couple of hours in the evening. The remark is surprising, not just because few Canadians are cricket fans, but few cricket fans anywhere are women. But being alone among women in a male-dominated group is nothing new for Olinyk. She is a plant manager for Saint-Gobains construction-materials plant in Plattsville, Ontario, a position few women aspire to and a workplace few women enter. Olinyk spent the previous 12 years in manufacturing positions at several automotive companies, a similarly female-averse industry. Its been like this since she welches a young g irl.It takes a certain type of person to deal with that kind of environment, she said of working in a world of brawny, tough guys. Maybe its because I grew up as a tomboy. And when I went to engineering school, I was the one girl in a class of 600. It is an environment that I have known my entire life, so when I go to work and there is me and 40 guys, and everybody that reports to me is male, and there might be one administrative assistant on the other side of the office that I am sharing a bathroom with this is just what I have become used to.What she isnt used to is being at the top of the operation. Olinyk made the jump from automotive manufacturing to construction materials in October to attain the top position in a plant - and escape an industry that landseems to be on the decline. The industry switch got Olinyk the plant-manager job she always wanted and a new opportunity to network with women in her position and mentor young women entering the manufacturing field in growing n umbers. The off ramp from automotiveOlinyk, who is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt (business-management certification) spent most of her time trouble shooting problems within manufacturing and business processes at auto plants. After 12 years, however, the top post of plant manager had yet to materialize.I love automotive. I love the pace and being on the bleeding edge, she said. I had spent a lot of time in senior positions with different functions within the automotive industry. And I had spent so much time over the latter half of my career being the voice behind the throne that I just decided it was time to put my money where my mouth was and take on the role myself while trying to make the cultural transition to a Six Sigma environment. And Saint Gobain offered that.Olinyk began looking at jobs in early summer 2008 but did not make a concerted effort to move until August. She used OpsLadder to post her resume and was put in touch with different recruiters, one of whom introduced he r to Saint-Gobain. She accepted the job in October, just as the Big Three automakers - Chrysler, Ford and General Motors - made their case to Congress for a federal bailout to avoid bankruptcy.Although the construction industry in the U.S. faces diminishing demand for materials and a crisis just short of the one facing the automakers, Olinyk is cautiously optimistic. International exports and the weak Canadian dollar are all plus factors for Saint-Gobain, she said.I think that the Canadian economy is somewhat more robust than what is going on in the States right now, she said. We dont quite see the recessionary fluctuations as you see on the U.S. side in most cases, although we do lag behind because the economies are so tied. Any industry in Canada does market a fair amount of their product in the States. Fortunately for the business that I am in, it is actually a global consumer base, so I am exporting to Europe and to China and to South America, she said. So that does cushion th e blow somewhat. The other thing that we see is the positive assistance that we get from monetary exchange, so when the Canadian dollar is a little bit down (as it traditionally has been over the last 25 years), it does give us a little more leverage and give us a competitive advantage. The plant, which is within driving distance of her London, Ontario home, was also a major factor for Olinyk, who has two grown daughters and elderly parents nearby. So everything, she recalled, came together very nicely.Transferrable skillsSaint-Gobain SA is a French multinational that was founded in 1665 to produce the glass for the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. Today, it is one of the worlds top 100 industrial corporations, producing an array of construction and high-performance materials. It is a huge company, and they are into so many different things, she said. It doesnt have a name like GE, but they have just about as many employees. They have places all over (the world). They do s pecial building materials and concrete and glass, and we (at the Plattsville plant) are in the abrasives business. Every time I open one of the newsletters, I see all kinds of weird and wonderful things I didnt know about. At Saint-Gobain Canada, Olinyk has full PL responsibility for a facility that manufactures and converts sandpaper, where she said she applies the saatkorn Six Sigma process and leadership aptitude she honed at auto plants. It doesnt matter whether you are making widgets or trinkets or atomic bombs or jet liners, she said. It really doesnt matter what the outcome product is. You really have to focus on leadership, and managing people and processes. And if you can do that, you can go into any industry and be successful.I dont think industry really matters that much, she said. If you are going to want to take a leadership role, you have to take a leadership role no matter what it is that you are doing. Its a mans world? Not many women consider operations management in ei ther auto- or construction materials-manufacturing plants. For those who do, Olinyk hopes her years of experience can make this career path more accessible. It is not an easy life, Olinyk admitted. It can get very tough. Theres a lot of stress. You give up a lot as far as your personal life, your family life. It can very nasty. It can get very verbal, and you have just got to be able to take it.It turns out, the experience is not as unique as Olinyk had assumed. She recently attended a womens-only conference at Smith College, North Hampton, Mass., where she discovered what good company she is in.It was really unique experience for me because I was meeting a lot of other women from engineering backgrounds who have done wonderful things in their careers, she said. I truly found out that although I may be unique in my neighborhood, there are more people out there like me than I ever assumed. The idea of networking with other women in engineering and construction is a fairly new phenomeno n to Olinyk, but she said she feels an added sense of responsibility to assist younger women now finding success in her specialty. It really wasnt available when I was starting out, she said. And now it is nice to know that they are out there. I guess I have learned to stand on my own two feet. But I am aware of younger ladies who are coming up the ranks now. I tend to want to spend a little bit more time with them, and take on a mentor role with them.

Music News Press Release Template
Music News Press Release TemplateMusic News Press Release TemplateWhen you get some good berichterstattung about your band or an artist on your music label, dont keep it to yourself. Maybe a singer has been asked to do a special radio session or a songwriter has just picked up an award. Whatever it is, make sure you share that information with the nachrichten media. Every time something new happens with your band or label, it gives the press one more reason to put your name in print. Following a news release template is a good way to spread the word. Before getting started, consider a few basics. Be succinct with news releases about appearances, honors bestowed, or something similar. Put the key information up front to grab the readers attention and go easy on the background material. Likewise, dont overthink the best time to send your press release. With breaking news, you want to get the information to the press as it happens. The Header The header is your headline- a summary o f your news in just a few words, such as (Band Name) to appear on (Radio Show). This header should be larger than the rest of the text on the page and can be further set apart by using bold print. Beneath your headline, you also can include a subhead including a few more crucial details about the news. For instance, Appearance scheduled for 4 p.m. on January 25 in the (Radio Station Call Letters) studio. Make the subhead smaller than your headline but larger than the rest of the text on your page. Italicizing the subhead will further set it apart. Lead Paragraph State the news clearly and succinctly, and get straight to the point. For example, if the news release is to announce an award, open the lead paragraph with something like, John Q. Singer has been named the recipient of the (Name of Award). If it is an annual award, include the applicable year in the lead sentence. Follow up the lead sentence with details about who is presenting the award, and when and where the presenta tion will take place. If the event is open to the public, include a sentence about when and where tickets will go on sale and for how much. Adjust the wording appropriately depending on the nature of the news being announced, but the important thing is to stick to the basic facts with the lead paragraph and avoid extraneous detail. Middle Paragraph(s) If applicable and available, include a brief quote from the subject of the news in the second paragraph. This is optional, and releases being sent out on short notice are less likely to include them because there might not be time to get a statement from anyone. Following that, include a quick overview of relevant background information. If the news is about an award or an event, provide some details about it in plus-rechnen to some specifics about the artist(s) being featured or honored. Anticipate the sorts of questions reporters might ask when they call to follow up on the information in the news release. The more complete the n ews release, the less time you have to spend on the phone answering questions about mundane details. Closing Paragraph and Attachments Use the closing to include the contact information of the person who will be fielding requests for more information about the news. You also might have promotional photos of the artist who is the subject of the news release, and the closing should make it clear that the photos are included with the news release. Also, note any other documents that need to be sent along with the release. Letterhead, Email, and Social Media The actual news release should fit easily on one page, and it is best to use letterhead. Include the band or label logo at the top of the letterhead, if applicable, along with contact information including phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and websites. Attach the news release and any applicable documents to an email addressed to the news organizations receiving the release. In the body of the email, include information from the first paragraph of the news release with a note stating that more detailed information is included in an attached news release. Use band or label websites or social media accounts to post a PDF of the release and the included information. Dont rely only on music journalists to spread the news get the information to your online followers.

The Future of Design
The Future of Design The Future of Design The Future of DesignThere are elements of engineering design that are cruder than they might first seem. The way designers input data into computer aided design is based largely on how programmers input their code, not what might be most natural. And the distribution policy where designers workthe officemay soon be outmoded.Levent Burak Kara, assistant mechanical engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon, has been developing a pen-like device that he hopes will some day soon take the place of the computer mouse. The idea is to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard with mora natural, human-centric tools, Kara said. His pen would let engineers use the computer screen like a piece of paper, but with more depth. The difference between Karas pen and the pen and tablet long available to graphic designers is the ability to sketch in three dimensions. The device would have applications beyond engineering. A surgeon, for instance, might perform vir tual surgery using the pen in place of a scalpel.Early computer users, circa 1960, interacted with their computers by sweeping a light pen across an x-y plotter. The pen fell out of favor, but may be poised for a resurgence, when it comes to CAD.Karas idea harks back to the early days of CAD. In 1963, Ivan Sutherland, a student at MIT, created his Sketchpad system. The program used a light pen as an input device. Sutherland believed that for describing the shape of a mechanical part or the connections of an electrical circuit, typed statements can prove cumbersome. So where, then is our Sutherland pen?Nongraphical people took hold of computer development and took it beyond graphics and CAD programs, Kara said. Unix was textual based, so the computer evolved around the keyboard. They needed more pointing and clicking than drawing, and the mouse was good for pointing and clicking. Now were trying to get back to more natural tools.Jon Hirschtick, founder of SolidWorks, hopes to add touc h-screens, such as those found on iPads and ATM machines, as an interface for CAD. Engineers might draw on the screen with a pen-based input or might use a haptic device to feel as though theyre grabbing a model to manipulate it.The most frequently used commands in the CAD program are moving models around, Hirschtick said. So the idea of interacting with the model by grabbing it with your hand is powerful.Hirschtick also sees engineers routinely printing in 3-D to study designs, just as publishers today print manuscripts to proof them on paper rather than on the screen. Though the technology has been around for some time, it is becoming more affordable and now has a place in small businesses. The cost of the equipment, the fidelity of the modelits color and accuracyall that is changing faster than anything else I know of in the CAD and computer landscape, Hirschtick said.Perhaps a greater 3-D change is coming to the way engineers do business. Mark Jakiela, a professor of mechanical design at Washington University, is developing methods that will make it possible for mechanical engineers to work independently, as freelance talent, unchained to a single locale.Freelancers could have more and varied opportunities for employment, said Jakiela, and the companies they work for would have fewer costs in terms of long-term benefits and office space.Under the model envisioned by Jakiela, independent mechanical engineers would band together to work on a project through an Internet site.Jakiela studied how engineers at large equipment manufacturers work together on product development. To translate that method to the Internet, Jakiela developed a forum type software (commonly found on the Webin which a poster begins a threaded conversation to which other posters respond) for engineers. The real value is in the process, Jakiela said. The software itself is not radically new.Adapted from Design Futures, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, September 2 008.The idea is to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard with more natural, human-centric toolsLevent Burak Kara, Assistant Mechanical Engineering Professor at Carnegie Mellon

Career Psychology Understanding your own psychology can be just as i mportant as understanding the psychology of others when it come to your professional success in the finance industry. For example, how are you at managing your own finances? Whatis your risk tolerance? What area of finance would serve you best careerwise? This type of enlightenment will serve you well as you navigate your career. Decisions Under Stress Under stress, people often become more intuitive and less analytical. In particular, financial advisorsand securities traders must make quick decisions under conditions of uncertainty with huge sums of money at stake. Inexperienced employees often do not have good intuition, and financial managers should be aware of the psychology and emotional maturity of their staff. Those who understand psychology are better equipped to have accurage forsight, to understand how the market affects human behavior and vice versa, and to manage situations appropriately considering the context and conditions. In short, a background in psychology wil l be of service to anyone who enters the finance industry in any capacity

The people writing stories about sexual misconduct arent who you might think
The people writing stories about sexual misconduct arent who you might thinkThe people writing stories about sexual misconduct arent who you might thinkIt may seem as though stories about sexual misconduct are everywhere. And theres a reason for that - when the MeToo movement launched in October 2017, there was a record number of articles about sexual assault, groping, harassment, rape and other forms of misconduct that published over the curse of a few months. The trend peaked in November 2017, when an average of 54 stories on the subject were published each day.Though those headlines may have died down after an initial rush of information, theres still mora coverage of sexual misconduct now than before the movement ensued. According to a report by the Womens Media Center (WMC), in achter monat des jahres 2018, the categories of reporting they researched in regard to MeToo remained up overall from the beginning of our study, clearly showing that the media is paying more attention.B ut as a barrage of knowledge rains down on the American people, the WMC took the time to look at who gets to narrate MeToo. And its not who you might think.According to WMCs report, between May 2017 and August 2018, 47% of the bylines on articles about sexual misconduct in 14 of the countrys most circulated newspapers belonged to women, compared to 53% that belonged to men. Before MeToo hit in October 2017, the trend was even starker - only 45% of stories related to sexual misconduct were written by women. After October 2017, women wrote a larger proportion of relevant articles, but overall, the majority of bylines still belonged to men. These statistics are actually more equal than the national average for the gender distribution of bylines in newspapers across all stories, where women rank around 40% of bylines, according to WMC. But it may still come as a surprise that women are not usually the ones writing articles about an issue that disproportionately affects them, especially as two-thirds of graduates with degrees in mass communications or journalism are women. This breakdown becomes even more important to understand in context, with the realization that male and female reporters write very different stories when it comes to sexual misconduct. In a 2015 report, Writing Rape How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault, WMC found that women only wrote 31% of the bylined stories about campus rape. When they did, their reportage was often informed by a more victim-focused perspective.Women journalists interviewed alleged victims more often than male journalists, and a higher proportion of women journalists wrote about the impact of the alleged attack on alleged victims, according to WMC. Forty percent of women journalists covered this aspect of stories, versus 33% of male journalists. A higher proportion of male journalists used quotes about the behavior of our impact on the alleged perpetrator than did female journalists - 35% versus 32%.There are male journalists who have done some of the industrys pioneering work on sexual misconduct. Ronan Farrow, the New Yorkers investigative reporter, won a Pulitzer after he published an expos on movie mogul Harvey Weinsteins alleged sexual misconduct. Farrow is known as one of the foremost journalists reporting on sexual misconduct today, and his coworker Jane Mayer recently said his supportive nature is often what makes survivors feel as though they can speak up.And so men can clearly report about MeToo in an impactful way, but research suggests their approach is still different from their female peers. The MeToo movement has opened up the floodgates for real conversation about sexual misconduct in the personal and professional spheres. Now, the question is, whos leading the discussion?

How Fancy Does My Resume Need to Be
How Fancy Does My Resume Need to Be How Fancy Does My Resume Need to Be If youâve ever been roped into helping out with a childâs elementary or social group project, you probably have firsthand experience with the perils of glue, glitter, sparkles and other unnecessary fluff. For those under the age of 12, adding a little bit of decoration can help draw attention to projects, and also distract from the inevitable lack of factual support. This approach may work well in the class room or scouts meeting, but when it comes to a professional resume, âmake it fancyâ has an entirely other effect. Minus the sparkles and special effects, resumes do have their own particular flair and formatting. A generic resume that doesnât convey the appropriate message is one of the quickest ways to sink your chances at an interview. With this in mind, there are a few tips and tricks about what you should be including in that CV. Read on to find out just how fancy your resume should be and what steps you can take to put your best, and most professional, foot forward. Short and Sweet Hiring managers are generally pressed for time when reviewing candidate resumes for open positions. In addition to sifting through countless applications, professionals have the primary tasks of their own position to keep on top of. A quality resume should be no more than one page in length and should be free of irrelevant information or unecessary fluff. Stick to just the facts and let your experience speak for itself. Avoid the Jargon Slang terms or socially charming colliquiolisms certainly have their place in conversations between friends at the bar, but when it comes to your resume these phrases should be persona non grata. Give your resume a once over and eliminate terms such as âteam playerâ, âgame changerâ or âgo getterâ. Instead of generic terms that convey little relevant information, insert active descriptions and explanations of your prior work to truly shine. Fonts and Formatting Donâts Everyone who has ever sat in front of a word processing program has dreamt of the day when you could select one of those creative fonts from the library to spice up a missive. The professional resume, however, is not the place to experiment with the appriate usage of wingdings. Cursive or other creative fonts can make your resume appear childish or unprofessional. Stick with tried and true classics such as Times New Roman in order to avoid sticking out like a sore thumb for all the wrong reasons. Maintain Professionalism A well-written and impactful resume should always leave the reader with a positive and professional impression of the potential candidate. Job-seekers looking to make an impact should go for standard template style resumes with formatting and inclusion that match peers in their field. Review a few standard resumes for format and up the impression you leave with employers as being professional and in the know. Accuracy is King While a misstype in a date or wrongly included word may not seem like a big deal to potential applicants, these mistakes can make your resume stand out poorly against a backdrop of other solid candidates. Accuracy in your employment and education dates is important in helping to avoid red flags when employers inevitably follow up with employment verification checks. Misspelling the name of a school or previous employer can make the wrong impression with your hiring manager or HR representative. Ask a colleague, friend or other trusted source to give your resume a once over prior to submission and be sure to check and double check important dates. Keep in mind that piece of advice your mom or grandma was overly fond of; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Final Thoughts While being fancy may have worked for those grade school projects, when it comes to a professional resume its better to stick with the nuts and bolts. Focus on crafting a simple and concise documents that conveys the necessary and important information in as few words as possible. Doing this will let your talents and experience shine, giving you the best chance at landing the job or career of your dreams.

12 Interview Questions You Should Ask To Uncover Company Culture
12 Interview Questions You Should Ask To Uncover Company Culture 12 Interview Questions You Should Ask To Uncover Company Culture If you want to know what itâs like to work for a company, you canât exactly waltz up to a recruiter and ask âWhatâs your company culture like?â Besides the fact that company culture covers a whole lot of ground and summing it up in one answer isnât totally possible, itâs more likely than not to yield a polished, marketing-approved answer than a candid discussion. âIf you are asking⦠about the culture, [recruiters] will know that and attempt to tell you what you want to hear,â says Henry Goldbeck, President of Goldbeck Recruiting . âSo, if you are going to ask about company culture, itâs better to ask specific questions.â There are a number of questions you can ask during an interview that, while seeming fairly straightforward on the surface, can help uncover deeper intel about the inner workings of a company. We asked a handful of career, recruiting, and HR experts to share a few of their favorites - keep these in mind the next time youâre in an interview and want to know the scoop. âThis is a question to ask each of your interviewers. If everyone you meet has only been there a short time you need to probe further,â says Career Counselor and Executive Coach Roy Cohen. âUnless the company is a startup , expanding rapidly, or the department is newly established, this is a serious red flag. High turnover could be a sign of low pay, long hours, lack of opportunity for career advancement, or incompetent management.â This question âgives [interviewers] the chance to reveal if employee efforts are acknowledged and appreciated and if people enjoy having company parties/gatherings,â says Valerie Streif, Senior Advisor at career services company Mentat . âIf they donât do anything to celebrate, it may be a thankless and cold environment.â âCompanies that have no dress code or a very loose one are often less traditional than companies with full business-dress requirements. Certainly, there are exceptions, but I rarely find a company where everyone wears a full suit and tie or skirt suit every day that also has dogs in the office and nap rooms and free beer,â says Jill Santopietro Panall, HR consultant and owner of 21Oak HR Consulting, LLC . âBe careful, here, though, because an informal dress code doesnât necessarily mean that thereâs less pressure or stress. Many tech companies have no dress code but are also total pressure cookers. Appearance standards are only a small clue to the environment, not the whole picture.â âIf companies have softball leagues, trivia teams, company outings, retreats or other planned social events, it can often give you a clue to how important they think it is for co-workers to LIKE one another, not just work together,â Santopietro Panall says. This can be especially important if you âhave recently moved, are entering the workforce after college or anyone else that needs a social aspect in the workplace,â adds Nikki Larchar, Co-Founder/Human Resource Business Partner at simplyHR LLC . âOn the flip side, that kind of togetherness may not be for everyone,â Santopietro Panall acknowledges. âIf the thought of socializing with your co-workers leaves you cold, you may want to look for a company with a more 9-5 environment.â It may come across as an obvious question, but it actually does a great job at revealing âwhether or not the company blames processes or people when something goes wrong. The former indicates that they are a continuous learning organization and the latter may be a sign of a blame culture,â says Mary Grace Gardner, career strategist at The Young Professionista . âListen to who or what gets blamed for the failure and if they have taken steps to learn from it.â Keep an ear out for how their answer hints at the degree of politics present in the office, too. âCompany politics play a huge role in overall job satisfaction , and itâs important to know ahead of time how decisions are made and conflicts are resolved,â shares Natasha Bowman, Chief Consultant at Performance ReNEW and author of the upcoming book You Canât Do That At Work! 100 Common Mistakes That Managers Make . âThis question tells you whether or not you have leaders in place who are in touch with the work and making knowledgeable decisions. The best and brightest ideas oftentimes come directly from the people actually doing the work, so if a leader rarely spends time with staff, it points to a lack of innovation and support in their culture,â says Gardner. This question may not be quite as important to ask of a large business, but âin a small business, that interaction with the top level may be key to you getting ahead, being able to get things done and having that personâs vision be carried out by their team,â Santopietro Panall says. It âmight also give you a key to the level of the workaholism that you can expect there. If the recruiter says âoh, our CEO Sally is here 90 hours a week, she never takes a day off!â youâre going to know that the culture is going to be very focused on putting in a lot of hours with a lot of face time.â âFinding out what people tend to do on their lunch hour will tell you whether they are slammed with work, donât want to spend time with their colleagues, or tend to be social and enjoy each otherâs company,â Bowman says. âThis information can also tell you whether or not your potential colleagues might be more extroverted or introverted. Depending on your own preferences, this response can give you some valuable insight into the team that youâre joining.â If you want to avoid a boss with outrageous expectations, this is the question to ask. âBefore you accept an offer you need to know that your new boss has realistic expectations with respect to what you will accomplish and by when,â Cohen says. âNo matter how attractive an offer may be, if you do not, or cannot, deliver results you will fail. So, if you are told that the bar is outrageously high and you donât have enough time to come up to speed, think twice before accepting the terms without discussion or negotiation.â This question is probably best saved for a last-round interview so you donât seem too intrusive, but âtaking a walk around the workspace is a great way to get a real feel for the day-to-day culture,â Larchar says. âAre individuals interacting with one another? Do the workers look stressed? Are the individual workspaces decorated? What is the setup of the office? Does the work space seem inclusive ? How are the departments organized? If you thrive on working with others, youâll want a work environment where that feels natural.â One thing Santopietro Panall recommends keeping an eye on in particular is how many senior-level employees have their own offices. âItâs a clue to how structured and hierarchical the company is,â she says. âCompanies with few or no private offices tend to be less top-down than companies with a lot of private offices or a whole CEO floor. Thereâs a strong trend, in many businesses, of removing private spaces in offices and making all space communal - some companies are loving it and finding it effective and others are dreading it, but whether a company would even consider it is a sign of how much they are trying to embrace a certain kind of flexible, collaborative work style.â âIf it is important that you and the company are aligned in terms of shared priorities such as corporate responsibility or giving back , then understanding their level of involvement offers important insight,â Cohen says. âSome companies make a point of promoting their community activities. Others view philanthropy and volunteering as a distraction. At the very least, if there is a disconnect, then you will not be disappointed when the company opts for limited commitment.â âThis also ties back into the question regarding social activities,â Larchar adds. âAre there events outside of work that the company supports and do they align with what you believe in or value as an individual?â âRather than asking âCan I have a flexible schedule?â in your initial conversation⦠ask if others already do,â recommends Santopietro Panall. âIf nobody does now, youâll know that the culture is more formal and any requests for flex-time or alternate work arrangements may be met with less enthusiasm. If lots of people have flexible schedules, youâll get a read on the work-life balance.â Itâs important to keep in mind the level of seniority for flexible employees as well, however. âItâs not helpful to you if youâre applying to a mid-level position and a senior manager has a flexible work schedule. Ask specifically about what location and scheduling flexibility exists for others in positions similar to yours,â Bowman says. âBesides the benefits of getting a degree or a certificate program subsidized by the company, this question offers insight into several other important aspects of company culture,â Cohen says. âDoes the company view continuing education and advanced degrees as adding value to your profile? Does the company make time for you to pursue outside training? And even more important, if there is time for training, does this mean working there will allow for balance and a life outside?â Beyond that, itâs also a good indicator of whether or not a company cares about employee retention. âPay attention to if a program exists and what it comprises of: conferences, mentorship or an internal leadership development program are all positive signs that the company is interested in retaining its employees for the long haul,â Gardner says.

This man swims to work every day for his commute and loves it
This man swims to work every day for his commute and loves it This man swims to work every day for his commute and loves it Forget commuting on buses, cars, trains, or your own two legs. One man in Munich, Germany, said that heâs found a superior way of transportation that allows him to avoid lines, rush hours, and all the humans in confined spaces: swimming.Benjamin David once had a 1.2-mile commute to work along the local Isar river that left him stressed, he told BBC. But once David began swimming in the river, he was no longer waiting in traffic alongside the water - and he said his life changed for the better.âHere along the river on the local highway, traffic has become so congested, but also very aggressive,â David told CBC radio. âWhen I was on my bike, I would yell at cars. When I was on foot, I would yell at cyclists, and so on and so forth. And just a few metres to the side of that is the river, and if you just swim down that, itâs completely relaxed and refreshing.â(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.crea teElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1version=v3.1'; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); The man who swims to work Rather than dealing with traffic, he jumps into the river. Posted by BBC Capital on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 Swimming is more relaxing than waiting in trafficDavid said that he puts his valuables including his laptop and his work clothes in a waterproof bag that floats. By holding this bag, David can gently float down the river for about 30 minutes until he reaches his office. Itâs a one-way trip: David does not swim back home from work because he said he cannot swim against the current.Although David told BBC that he has convinced a few of his co-workers to join him in the mornings, his swimming-to-work movement has not caught on with the whole city.âPeople look down from the bridges and laugh or ask what Iâm doing,â he said.Of course, not everyone has a clean body of water that can carry them to work each morning. But Davidâs story shows that more innovative ways to alleviate commuting stress are welcome and needed.Commuting to and from work can be an exhausting activity that puts a toll on our bodies. Science has proven that itâs bad for our health. People who drove 10-mile c ommutes were found to be at higher risks for depression, anxiety, and social isolation, according to a 2012 study. Even just imagining a rush-hour commute caused peopleâs blood pressures to spike, as one University of Utah experiment found. And itâs only going to get worse. For workers in the U.S., commutes are getting longer than ever. A 2017 Gallup poll found that extreme commutes taking longer than 90 minutes are the fastest-growing type of commute. So as youâre trapped in the confines of your car in traffic or are squished between commuters on subways, know that one manâs having a commute he enjoys.

What Youll Find Cleaning Out Your Desk - The Muse
What Youll Find Cleaning Out Your Desk - The Muse What Youll Find Cleaning Out Your Desk The final two weeks at a job are a whirlwind of documenting everything, explaining what you did on a daily basis, and hoping that everything goes both smoothly and horribly when youâre gone. (After all, what if you leave and everyone realizes theyâre just fine without you? Thatâd be devastating.) The final two weeks are also a whirlwind of paperwork. And not just the paperwork involved with your exit, but also literal pieces of paper that youâve been shoving into your desk since day one- training documents from that seminar, resumes from when you were hiring, flyers someone handed you on the street that you accepted because youâre bad at confrontation and couldnât just say, âNo thank you, Iâm a lady and therefore not interested in a menâs suit sale.â In fact, Iâve come to learn that cleaning out your desk is a reckoning of sorts, a time when youâre forced to come face-to-face with all your âIâll figure out what to do with this laterâ choices. I know this because itâs currently my life. In fact, Iâm writing this article as a way to avoid finishing cleaning out my own desk. And because of that, I can confidently tell you what youâll find if youâre currently in the same situation. 1. Business Cards How I want to respond when handed a business card: âIt would skip me a step if youâd bypass my hand and put that straight into the recycling bin.â How I actually respond: âWhy yes my good sir, of course, I would love nothing more than for you to give me that tiny piece of paper that is both big enough to annoy me, yet small enough to get lost in the bottom of my bag.â And because thatâs how I respond, I have a ton of business cards that end up in my desk drawer. And going through them all in my last two weeks has been a trip down memory lane- but the kind of memory lane where everythingâs far more fuzzy than nostalgic. Chad from Marketing Corp. Huh. Perhaps I met him when I cut the cheese line at that event. Or no, maybe he was the guy on the elevator trying to sell me his services. 2. A Drugstore Emergencies happen at work. And thatâs why Iâve always made sure to always have a few necessities on hand. But what started as a Tide Stick and umbrella has morphed into an entire aisle of CVS. Office too hot? I have deodorant! Smelly lunch? Iâve got mints. Client interaction gone wrong? Iâve not only got an entire change of clothes, but also a new identity ready-to-go. And you know what, while some of these items might be overkill, Iâve got zero regrets about that. While it accumulated at a surprising rate, I also never panicked when I spilled something, or when it started pouring, or when I suddenly decided I hated my shoes and needed a new pair immediately. 3. A Grocery Store You know what hoarders always say- you canât open a drugstore in your desk without also opening a grocery store. And thatâs why I have enough half-eaten, fully-stale snacks ready to go the second someone says âThe apocalypse has arrived and youâre trapped in the office indefinitely.â Unlike my drugstore advice, I will not pat myself on the back for this one. Instead, Iâll promise myself to stop acting like Iâll ever be in my office for more than a day at a time (and that means I will never need more than a granola bar). 4. Office Supplies I was that kid who lived for back-to-school shopping. Nothing got me quite as jazzed as a fresh new set of binders did. And so, in an effort to recapture that feeling into adulthood, Iâve gotten into a horrible habit of saying yes to any office supplies that are offered to me- either directly or indirectly in the form of an unlocked supply closet. That means, despite the fact 99% of my job involves a computer, I have a stapler, 19 packs of sticky notes, two kinds of tape, four colors of highlighters, and Lisa Frank herself tucked into my drawers. In retrospect, I probably couldâve gotten the same satisfaction from opening up the supply closet every so often and just breathing in that scent of fresh file folders. 5. Memories OK, fine, you caught me. Iâm human, and I have emotions, and leaving a job is hard. Despite making the above list, I canât part with anything! Everything I pick up and attempt to throw away feels meaningful. You see a coupon for 5% off a $10 juice that Iâll never use, I see the time I grabbed a long lunch with a co-worker and was handed that on my way out. You see a âcongratsâ sign in messy handwriting, I see the time I got promoted and my team surprised me by decorating my desk. You see a childrenâs toy, I see accessories from a team Halloween costume that shouldâve won first-place in the office costume contest (and Iâm totally not at all bitter about it). Donât get me wrong- all of this needs to go in the trash. I live in New York City and I donât have room in my apartment to hold all my memories. But parting with it isnât easy. And thatâs because saying goodbye to a job isnât easy. Even if weâre excited for our next chapter, even if weâre ready to go, and even if itâs our time to leave. For better or worse, we get attached to our jobs, we get attached to the projects we spend time on, and we get attached to the people we work with. Even if we donât always like what we do and even if we donât always like the people we do it with, we spend 40 (or more!) hours a week attaching ourselves to something thatâs bigger than us. Thatâs why, when itâs time to leave, itâs not just time to hand in our key cards and grab farewell drinks, but itâs also time to say goodbye to a part of ourselves. And sometimes, cleaning out our desks will remind us just how big a part of ourselves our jobs became. To quote myself from just a few paragraph ago, saying goodbye to a job isnât easy. (Nor is finding a rogue raisin in your desk drawer and knowing that youâve never once eaten a raisin at work.) So, if youâre in the process of doing it, know that itâs OK if youâre going through all the emotions. Itâs OK if youâre having trouble throwing out stuff you forgot even existed. And itâs OK if youâre putting off even touching that bottom drawer until the very last second. You have a new exciting adventure ahead of you, but that doesnât mean you canât spend a few moments thinking about all the moments- big and small, fun and challenging, scary and rewarding- that youâre leaving behind.

Running an Effective Long-Distance Job Search
Running an Effective Long-Distance Job Search Running an Effective Long-Distance Job Search Tips to help keep you in the running with hiring managers when you want to relocate. Now that youâve decided you want to relocate and your calculations tell you that the financial math is on your side and you can afford to relocate, thereâs still one small detail to work out - getting the actual job.Hiring managers across the country are being bombarded with resumes from qualified candidates within their own city, which makes it tough for an out-of-towner to get recognized. To make matters even more challenging, some companies use computer programs to scan each resume to weed out undesirable characteristics such as distant zip codes.Rachel Dotson, a communications manager at the job-distribution service ZipRecruiter.com, says donât fret. She recommends that job seekers looking to relocate should leave their address off the online resume forms. Or if that doesnât work, use the address of a family member or friend thatâs in the market where the job is.âItâs a little misle ading,â Dotson said. âBut that way you donât get your resume automatically thrown out.â She added that tricking a computer and tricking a real person are two totally different things, so once you get to the level where youâre dealing with a hiring manager make sure you come clean. âItâs tricky because you have to be honest about it,â Dotson said. The cover letter is often an effective forum for explaining your situation, experts say. âTalk about the local market and specific stuff in that city,â she said. âPresent yourself in a way that shows youâre going to be there regardless.âLynette Kittle of Colorado has moved for work multiple times with her husband - each taking turns as the job seeker who drove the relocation. âWhen first looking, we include in the cover letter âMy family and I would like to relocate toâ¦.â which seems to help,â Kittle said. âOnce one of us has been hired, then the one of us who is still looking changes it to âMy family and I are relocating toâ¦.ââ. But nothing sells a relocation effort like good old-fashioned face time. âIf the person already knows where they want to move they should go out and attend some career fairs,â Dotson said. âBeing there in person shows how committed you are.âWhen talking about your desired location, Dotson says job seekers should make sure they come off like a native. âYou donât want to sound like a tourist,â she said. âIdeally, youâll have some sort of a connection.â That kind of intel can be attained by making local connections through social media sites, Dotson said, adding that job seekers should take advantage of all types of technology when pursuing a relocation.Even the interviews can be done digitally. âVideo interviewing is becoming a big thing for a lot of companies,â Dotson said. âEven people within the city are getting rid of the phone interview for the video interview.âConsider Skype to be face time - but with a modern twis t. It can be much more convenient for both sides involved, but Dotson warns job seekers not to get too comfortable with the process. âAt least from the face up be presentable,â she said. âDonât do it from a Starbucks or somewhere thatâs noisy. ⦠Treat them like any other interview.âThe next steps to figure out will likely involve plane tickets. By then youâll be well on your way to your dream job - in your dream location.

Even The Ethicist hates malpractice lawyers
Even The Ethicist hates malpractice lawyers Even The Ethicist hates malpractice lawyers In this Sundays New York Times Magazine, ethicist Randy Cohen offers seemingly contradictory advice to two different letter-writers. Advice-seeker No. 1 is involved in law firm recruiting and asks whether it is OK to recommend not hiring someone solely because of his or her politics (those politics being reflected in the candidates membership in the Federalist Society). Cohens response: You may not. If candidates can do the job, bathe regularly and work well with others, you should hire them.He proceeds to berate the lawyer for her question: Is it your position that only people who share your politics should be allowed to make a living? The interviewer, whose role is to consider [applicants] judgment and personality, isnt contending that Federalist Society members shouldnt be permitted to work, just that she doesnt want them working in her office. His argument: If you simply take a dislike to someone hes a blowhard; shes whiner and cannot rise above those feelings, then you may honorably turn those folks away.
