5 Resume Tips for Your Career Change

5 Resume Tips for Your Career Change 5 Steps to Crafting a Resume When Changing CareersWhen changing careers, you need a different resume-writing strategy. If youve decided to start a whole new career, congratulations While its not easy to break out of your comfort zone and start something new, having the courage to pursue your dream can be richly rewarding. In the case of changing careers, the journey starts with a single step creating a resume tailored to your new career target. Starting from scratch can be daunting, so here are five steps you can take to start yourself off on the right track during your career change.Step 1 Update your titleOften times, your professional title is the first thing on your resume after your name. Chief Financial Officer or Executive Assistant clearly let your prospective employer know the role you see yourself playing in their organization. It also strongly implies that you have fulfilled that role in the past. If you are transitioning to a new career , however, it can be misleading to title yourself a Chief Financial Officer on your resume if you have never actually been one. You can add the word Objective in front of your title to indicate that this kind of role is your goal but not necessarily a position youve previously held.If you dont feel comfortable putting your target title at the top of your resume, replace the traditional professional title with a Qualifications Profile and create a list of your strongest attributes that are applicable to your new job goals. Work the name of your target role into the first bullet point of your qualifications profile or professional summary.Step 2 Craft a new professional summaryIf you were applying for a job in your current field, this is where you would write a brief paragraph about what youve done and how you can benefit your future employer. When changing careers, however, you can use this space to highlight your most relevant transferable skills or educational credentials and indic ate that you are seeking to leverage them towards whatever your target role is.Step 3 Focus on transferable skillsCarefully review job descriptions for your target job. What kinds of skills are they seeking that you already have? Communication, vendor selection, negotiation, staff management, and development, for example, are all transferable skills that are highly desirable and not pertaining to any one industry. Make note of all your transferable skills that are prized in your new target industry and include those front and center.Step 4 Highlight education and certificationsSometimes when people are changing careers, they have educational backgrounds or certifications that suit them more to the position than their actual job history does. If this is the case, it is perfectly appropriate to place the education section before the professional experience section. This will direct the employers eye first to qualities that are directly applicable to the new job target and will work in your favor.Career Change Resume SampleStep 5 Identify accomplishmentsFinally, comb through your previous job history to identify the accomplishments that are most relatable to the new job. If you were staying in the same industry, you would want specific accomplishments that mirror the requirements of the new role. But when determining how to change careers, you may need to be a little more flexible to show your versatility.Rest assured, no matter how dramatic a change you are making, your previous experience has not been in vain. By taking the steps above, you can best leverage your previous career to help launch you into a brand new one.TopResume will give you feedback on your career-change resume. Engineers making the impossible possible

Engineers making the impossible possible Engineers making the impossible possiblePosted October 13, 2011, by Andrea Riddell Have you ever had a dream that landseemed impossible? Have you ever wanted to solve the energy problem, or walk on water? Even translate your dogs barks? Well, this is where Engineers Australia steps in. Looking to bring engineering to the people, their Make it So campaign aims to highlight what engineers do or, more importantly, what they can do. The campaign allows people to submit their ideas, dreams or inventions no matter how big or small from which one will be chosen and made so by a team of engineers. If you can dream it, then an engineer can make it the more creative the better Were looking for the next great engineering idea, says Jamie Penrose, Director of Communications and Marketing at Engineers Australia. Launching on 16 February, the idea is to lift the veil off the engineering industry, creating awareness of what engineering is all about for engineers themselves as well as the general public. We want to bridge the gap between peoples perception of engineering and what it is we actually do. We know that many Australians struggle to understand what engineers do and at times engineers can find it difficult to explain, says Peter Taylor, Chief Executive of Engineers Australia. This original promotion has already prompted much response with over 170 ideas already submitted before the official launch and over 7500 supporters on the website. Engineers Australia is calling for more practising engineers, engineering students or even engineering enthusiasts to get behind the campaign and register as an advocate. Becoming an advocate gives you the power to submit, rate, comment on and share ideas via social media. Ideas that have been submitted sortiment from the practical, make it so solar cells could be sprayed onto bricks and roof tiles, to the crazy, make it so my car goes underwater. Some ideas also verge on the impossibl e, make it so a machine helps us to see our own future days, weeks, months, or years ahead of us. Each week 10 top ideas will be short-listed, from which one will win an Ee PC laptop. The final winning submission will be chosen by an Engineers Australia panel and announced in August to coincide with Australian Engineering Week. What is engineering? If your mind draws a blank when you think of engineering dont worry, you are not alone. An Engineering Australia-commissioned research study revealed that engineering was one of the least understood professions. However, it had a high level of advocacy, meaning that people would willingly recommend it as a career choice. The study found that while engineering was the second most recommended career behind medicine, it had a low level of public understanding. This benchmark study was the spark that started the Make it So flame. The most common misconception about engineers is that they only create bridges and buildings. There are many d ifferent types of engineering disciplines. From the creation of the cochlear implant to the Airbus A380, and everything in-between, engineers have a hand in nearly everything we interact with each day, says Penrose. Engineering encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including aerospace and agriculture, making it hard to define exactly what an engineer is or does. So hard, in fact, that a competition was run last year to find the perfect definition. The winning definition by Daniel Indyk was commended for summing up the entire profession in a single sentence. Engineering is the discipline of using I(E)NGINUITY combined with the known laws of science to design and create devices and systems that improve the overall quality of life for mankind. And with Australia currently experiencing a skills shortage in engineering, the opportunities for engineering students are limitless. This broad industry will also make the execution of the Make it So campaign extremely interesting and div erse. With so many fields under the engineering umbrella, the possibilities for submissions are only limited by imagination. As the Make it So website says, The difference between amazing things existing in peoples minds and amazing things existing in real life is engineering and hard work. We need to share the truth that engineering teams solve problems that make peoples lives immeasurably better. So perhaps you have a great idea to stop global warming. Or maybe youve always wanted your very own robot to do your homework. Whatever it is, put on your creative thinking caps and lets give the engineers a challenge to remember.Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Environmental) HonoursStudy modeOn CampusPayment optionsHECS-HELPUpfront paymentCourse guide+ FREE eBrochureEnquire Online Enquire OnlineEngineering ResourcesEngineering manager sample resumeEngineering manager sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesKat Hocking - Chemical Engineer, Melbourne WaterInterested in becoming a?M anagement ConsultantOperations ManagerSupply Chain ManagerCivil EngineerMining EngineerPopular Career Searchessmall engine repair coursehow to become a quantity surveyor in australiahow to become a structural engineer in australiafire engineering courses australianight school engineering courseEngineering CoursesBachelor of Engineering (Civil) HonoursEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Engineering (Instrumentation Control and Automat...Enquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Technology (Motorsports)Enquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Engineering (Ocean Engineering) HonoursEnquire Online Enquire OnlineAndrea RiddellRelated ArticlesBrowse moreEngineeringWORKFORCE TRENDSEngineers Rebels with a causeLike a tall, dark and handsome stranger, engineering is often considered the mysterious outsider in the room full of Average Joes.EngineeringAustralian engineering innovations 3The dual-flush toilet saves up to 67 per cent water per flush. Hired! Changing Lanes from the Auto Industry

Hired Changing Lanes from the Auto IndustryHired Changing Lanes from the Auto IndustryChanging lanes for auto manufacturing managerI am watching the fourth day of the Third Cricket Test of Australia against South Africa, said Sheri Olinyk on the night of Jan. 5 from her home in London, Ontario. We have a special cable channel called Cricket Plus with all-day cricket. I turn it on when I cam home from work, and so I watch it for a couple of hours in the evening. The remark is surprising, not just because few Canadians are cricket fans, but few cricket fans anywhere are women. But being alone among women in a male-dominated group is nothing new for Olinyk. She is a plant manager for Saint-Gobains construction-materials plant in Plattsville, Ontario, a position few women aspire to and a workplace few women enter. Olinyk spent the previous 12 years in manufacturing positions at several automotive companies, a similarly female-averse industry. Its been like this since she welches a young g irl.It takes a certain type of person to deal with that kind of environment, she said of working in a world of brawny, tough guys. Maybe its because I grew up as a tomboy. And when I went to engineering school, I was the one girl in a class of 600. It is an environment that I have known my entire life, so when I go to work and there is me and 40 guys, and everybody that reports to me is male, and there might be one administrative assistant on the other side of the office that I am sharing a bathroom with this is just what I have become used to.What she isnt used to is being at the top of the operation. Olinyk made the jump from automotive manufacturing to construction materials in October to attain the top position in a plant - and escape an industry that landseems to be on the decline. The industry switch got Olinyk the plant-manager job she always wanted and a new opportunity to network with women in her position and mentor young women entering the manufacturing field in growing n umbers. The off ramp from automotiveOlinyk, who is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt (business-management certification) spent most of her time trouble shooting problems within manufacturing and business processes at auto plants. After 12 years, however, the top post of plant manager had yet to materialize.I love automotive. I love the pace and being on the bleeding edge, she said. I had spent a lot of time in senior positions with different functions within the automotive industry. And I had spent so much time over the latter half of my career being the voice behind the throne that I just decided it was time to put my money where my mouth was and take on the role myself while trying to make the cultural transition to a Six Sigma environment. And Saint Gobain offered that.Olinyk began looking at jobs in early summer 2008 but did not make a concerted effort to move until August. She used OpsLadder to post her resume and was put in touch with different recruiters, one of whom introduced he r to Saint-Gobain. She accepted the job in October, just as the Big Three automakers - Chrysler, Ford and General Motors - made their case to Congress for a federal bailout to avoid bankruptcy.Although the construction industry in the U.S. faces diminishing demand for materials and a crisis just short of the one facing the automakers, Olinyk is cautiously optimistic. International exports and the weak Canadian dollar are all plus factors for Saint-Gobain, she said.I think that the Canadian economy is somewhat more robust than what is going on in the States right now, she said. We dont quite see the recessionary fluctuations as you see on the U.S. side in most cases, although we do lag behind because the economies are so tied. Any industry in Canada does market a fair amount of their product in the States. Fortunately for the business that I am in, it is actually a global consumer base, so I am exporting to Europe and to China and to South America, she said. So that does cushion th e blow somewhat. The other thing that we see is the positive assistance that we get from monetary exchange, so when the Canadian dollar is a little bit down (as it traditionally has been over the last 25 years), it does give us a little more leverage and give us a competitive advantage. The plant, which is within driving distance of her London, Ontario home, was also a major factor for Olinyk, who has two grown daughters and elderly parents nearby. So everything, she recalled, came together very nicely.Transferrable skillsSaint-Gobain SA is a French multinational that was founded in 1665 to produce the glass for the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. Today, it is one of the worlds top 100 industrial corporations, producing an array of construction and high-performance materials. It is a huge company, and they are into so many different things, she said. It doesnt have a name like GE, but they have just about as many employees. They have places all over (the world). They do s pecial building materials and concrete and glass, and we (at the Plattsville plant) are in the abrasives business. Every time I open one of the newsletters, I see all kinds of weird and wonderful things I didnt know about. At Saint-Gobain Canada, Olinyk has full PL responsibility for a facility that manufactures and converts sandpaper, where she said she applies the saatkorn Six Sigma process and leadership aptitude she honed at auto plants. It doesnt matter whether you are making widgets or trinkets or atomic bombs or jet liners, she said. It really doesnt matter what the outcome product is. You really have to focus on leadership, and managing people and processes. And if you can do that, you can go into any industry and be successful.I dont think industry really matters that much, she said. If you are going to want to take a leadership role, you have to take a leadership role no matter what it is that you are doing. Its a mans world? Not many women consider operations management in ei ther auto- or construction materials-manufacturing plants. For those who do, Olinyk hopes her years of experience can make this career path more accessible. It is not an easy life, Olinyk admitted. It can get very tough. Theres a lot of stress. You give up a lot as far as your personal life, your family life. It can very nasty. It can get very verbal, and you have just got to be able to take it.It turns out, the experience is not as unique as Olinyk had assumed. She recently attended a womens-only conference at Smith College, North Hampton, Mass., where she discovered what good company she is in.It was really unique experience for me because I was meeting a lot of other women from engineering backgrounds who have done wonderful things in their careers, she said. I truly found out that although I may be unique in my neighborhood, there are more people out there like me than I ever assumed. The idea of networking with other women in engineering and construction is a fairly new phenomeno n to Olinyk, but she said she feels an added sense of responsibility to assist younger women now finding success in her specialty. It really wasnt available when I was starting out, she said. And now it is nice to know that they are out there. I guess I have learned to stand on my own two feet. But I am aware of younger ladies who are coming up the ranks now. I tend to want to spend a little bit more time with them, and take on a mentor role with them.

Music News Press Release Template

Music News Press Release TemplateMusic News Press Release TemplateWhen you get some good berichterstattung about your band or an artist on your music label, dont keep it to yourself. Maybe a singer has been asked to do a special radio session or a songwriter has just picked up an award. Whatever it is, make sure you share that information with the nachrichten media. Every time something new happens with your band or label, it gives the press one more reason to put your name in print. Following a news release template is a good way to spread the word. Before getting started, consider a few basics. Be succinct with news releases about appearances, honors bestowed, or something similar. Put the key information up front to grab the readers attention and go easy on the background material. Likewise, dont overthink the best time to send your press release. With breaking news, you want to get the information to the press as it happens. The Header The header is your headline- a summary o f your news in just a few words, such as (Band Name) to appear on (Radio Show). This header should be larger than the rest of the text on the page and can be further set apart by using bold print. Beneath your headline, you also can include a subhead including a few more crucial details about the news. For instance, Appearance scheduled for 4 p.m. on January 25 in the (Radio Station Call Letters) studio. Make the subhead smaller than your headline but larger than the rest of the text on your page. Italicizing the subhead will further set it apart. Lead Paragraph State the news clearly and succinctly, and get straight to the point. For example, if the news release is to announce an award, open the lead paragraph with something like, John Q. Singer has been named the recipient of the (Name of Award). If it is an annual award, include the applicable year in the lead sentence. Follow up the lead sentence with details about who is presenting the award, and when and where the presenta tion will take place. If the event is open to the public, include a sentence about when and where tickets will go on sale and for how much. Adjust the wording appropriately depending on the nature of the news being announced, but the important thing is to stick to the basic facts with the lead paragraph and avoid extraneous detail. Middle Paragraph(s) If applicable and available, include a brief quote from the subject of the news in the second paragraph. This is optional, and releases being sent out on short notice are less likely to include them because there might not be time to get a statement from anyone. Following that, include a quick overview of relevant background information. If the news is about an award or an event, provide some details about it in plus-rechnen to some specifics about the artist(s) being featured or honored. Anticipate the sorts of questions reporters might ask when they call to follow up on the information in the news release. The more complete the n ews release, the less time you have to spend on the phone answering questions about mundane details. Closing Paragraph and Attachments Use the closing to include the contact information of the person who will be fielding requests for more information about the news. You also might have promotional photos of the artist who is the subject of the news release, and the closing should make it clear that the photos are included with the news release. Also, note any other documents that need to be sent along with the release. Letterhead, Email, and Social Media The actual news release should fit easily on one page, and it is best to use letterhead. Include the band or label logo at the top of the letterhead, if applicable, along with contact information including phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and websites. Attach the news release and any applicable documents to an email addressed to the news organizations receiving the release. In the body of the email, include information from the first paragraph of the news release with a note stating that more detailed information is included in an attached news release. Use band or label websites or social media accounts to post a PDF of the release and the included information. Dont rely only on music journalists to spread the news get the information to your online followers.

The Future of Design

The Future of Design The Future of Design The Future of DesignThere are elements of engineering design that are cruder than they might first seem. The way designers input data into computer aided design is based largely on how programmers input their code, not what might be most natural. And the distribution policy where designers workthe officemay soon be outmoded.Levent Burak Kara, assistant mechanical engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon, has been developing a pen-like device that he hopes will some day soon take the place of the computer mouse. The idea is to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard with mora natural, human-centric tools, Kara said. His pen would let engineers use the computer screen like a piece of paper, but with more depth. The difference between Karas pen and the pen and tablet long available to graphic designers is the ability to sketch in three dimensions. The device would have applications beyond engineering. A surgeon, for instance, might perform vir tual surgery using the pen in place of a scalpel.Early computer users, circa 1960, interacted with their computers by sweeping a light pen across an x-y plotter. The pen fell out of favor, but may be poised for a resurgence, when it comes to CAD.Karas idea harks back to the early days of CAD. In 1963, Ivan Sutherland, a student at MIT, created his Sketchpad system. The program used a light pen as an input device. Sutherland believed that for describing the shape of a mechanical part or the connections of an electrical circuit, typed statements can prove cumbersome. So where, then is our Sutherland pen?Nongraphical people took hold of computer development and took it beyond graphics and CAD programs, Kara said. Unix was textual based, so the computer evolved around the keyboard. They needed more pointing and clicking than drawing, and the mouse was good for pointing and clicking. Now were trying to get back to more natural tools.Jon Hirschtick, founder of SolidWorks, hopes to add touc h-screens, such as those found on iPads and ATM machines, as an interface for CAD. Engineers might draw on the screen with a pen-based input or might use a haptic device to feel as though theyre grabbing a model to manipulate it.The most frequently used commands in the CAD program are moving models around, Hirschtick said. So the idea of interacting with the model by grabbing it with your hand is powerful.Hirschtick also sees engineers routinely printing in 3-D to study designs, just as publishers today print manuscripts to proof them on paper rather than on the screen. Though the technology has been around for some time, it is becoming more affordable and now has a place in small businesses. The cost of the equipment, the fidelity of the modelits color and accuracyall that is changing faster than anything else I know of in the CAD and computer landscape, Hirschtick said.Perhaps a greater 3-D change is coming to the way engineers do business. Mark Jakiela, a professor of mechanical design at Washington University, is developing methods that will make it possible for mechanical engineers to work independently, as freelance talent, unchained to a single locale.Freelancers could have more and varied opportunities for employment, said Jakiela, and the companies they work for would have fewer costs in terms of long-term benefits and office space.Under the model envisioned by Jakiela, independent mechanical engineers would band together to work on a project through an Internet site.Jakiela studied how engineers at large equipment manufacturers work together on product development. To translate that method to the Internet, Jakiela developed a forum type software (commonly found on the Webin which a poster begins a threaded conversation to which other posters respond) for engineers. The real value is in the process, Jakiela said. The software itself is not radically new.Adapted from Design Futures, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, September 2 008.The idea is to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard with more natural, human-centric toolsLevent Burak Kara, Assistant Mechanical Engineering Professor at Carnegie Mellon
